Vedic astrology, also called Jyotish, reads a sidereal zodiac. The signs are shifted from the tropical signs used by most Western apps, so your Vedic Sun, Moon, or rising sign can differ from the sign you already know. The difference is the measuring system, not a second personality. Start with the comparison in Vedic astrology vs Western astrology, then come back here for the rulers, houses, and timing pages.

A sign lord is the planet that manages a sign. A house lord is that same idea counted from your ascendant: once the rising sign is fixed, every house has a sign, and every sign has a planet. Nakshatra is the Moon’s mansion and sets the Vimshottari dasha sequence. Badhakesh is the obstruction lord for that ascendant. Mahadasha is the long planetary chapter. None of these names is a prediction by itself. They are the map. Your birth time decides which row is yours.

Read in this order if you are new: sign lords, then the house lords for your rising sign, then one planet-in-house page for the planet that rules your lagna, then the nakshatra of your Moon, then the mahadasha that is running now. If a page names a planet and you do not know where that planet sits, calculate the chart before you apply the paragraph to your life.

The searches that reach this library are usually one-planet questions: who rules Libra, who rules Scorpio, what Jupiter does in the first house, what Venus does in the seventh. Those questions have a short answer, and the short answer is on the page. The click is worth it when you still need the rest of the map: the other eleven houses, the sign that planet occupies in your chart, and whether its period is running. A lord that rules the first house describes the body and the way you start things. The same planet ruling the eighth, sixth, or twelfth describes a different job. Do not stop at the planet name.

Western pages often answer “Scorpio lord” with Pluto, or “Aquarius lord” with Uranus. This library does not. The rulers here are the classical grahas used for Vimshottari dasha and for whole-sign house lords. Pluto, Uranus, and Neptune can appear in a news-transit note when people are searching them. They are not the lords of signs, and they do not run mahadasha. If your Western chart and this site disagree on a sign, read the sidereal explanation before you decide the chart is wrong.

Every link below is a normal page, not a menu that appears only after a click. Sign lords, twelve ascendant house-lord tables, planet-in-house rows, twenty-seven nakshatras, Badhakesh, mahadasha, and transit notes are all in the HTML. Use them as a reference shelf. Use the chart calculator when the sentence has to become yours.

Sign Lords

Classical Vedic rulers use the seven visible planets. Saturn rules Aquarius. Jupiter rules Pisces. Rahu and Ketu do not rule signs in this table. The overview explains the rule; each row opens the twelve house lords for that sign as the ascendant.

Zodiac signs and their lords, full table

House Lords by Ascendant

Pick the rising sign, not the Sun sign. Whole-sign houses then place the next sign in the 2nd house, the sign after that in the 3rd, and so on through the 12th. The page names the planet on each house and what that house is for: body, money, effort, home, children, conflict, marriage, crisis, fortune, career, gains, and loss. Two people with the same ascendant still differ by where those lords sit and which dasha is active.

Planets in Houses

A planet in a house is not one sign for every chart. Under whole-sign houses the sign changes with the ascendant, so each page is a twelve-row table: sign occupied, fixed dignity, and the houses that planet rules. Exalted, own sign, and debilitated are the fixed dignities used here. Friend and enemy cells are only the natural relationship to the sign lord. Rahu and Ketu do not rule signs.

27 Nakshatras

The 27 nakshatras divide the sidereal zodiac into lunar mansions. Your birth Moon’s nakshatra names the planet that opens your Vimshottari dasha and how much of that first period remains. These pages describe the mansion. They do not replace the degree of your Moon.

Badhakesh (Obstruction Lord)

Badhakesh is the lord of the Badhaka house. Movable ascendants use the 11th, fixed ascendants use the 9th, and dual ascendants use the 7th. The role marks friction. It does not declare the planet harmful in every chart. Read the overview first, then the page for your rising sign, and keep the sign-lord page separate: Sagittarius lord is Jupiter, while the Badhaka lord for Sagittarius ascendant is Mercury.

Mahadasha and Transits

Mahadasha is the long chapter. Antardasha is the chapter inside it. A transit, or gochar, can trigger a theme, but it does not replace the dasha. Saturn mahadasha is read from Saturn’s houses, dignity, and placement for that ascendant, not from a Sun-sign slogan. Monthly pages on this site use Moon sign, lagna, dasha, and gochar together.

Our Method

The calculators use Lahiri ayanamsa and whole-sign houses. Reports follow the KN Rao line: name the chart factor, then check it against something you already lived. Entertainment reference only. It is not a basis for a life decision.

Questions

What is a sign lord in Vedic astrology?

The sign lord is the planet that rules a zodiac sign. Aries and Scorpio are Mars, Taurus and Libra are Venus, Gemini and Virgo are Mercury, Cancer is the Moon, Leo is the Sun, Sagittarius and Pisces are Jupiter, and Capricorn and Aquarius are Saturn.

Where are the house lords for my ascendant?

Open the house-lord page for your rising sign. It lists the 1st through 12th houses, the sign on each house, and the planet that rules that house.

How should I use these guides with my own chart?

Use the guides for the rule, then calculate your chart. myjataka reads the astronomical chart first and asks you to score past periods before you rely on a future reading.
